Jim Prather, Executive Vice President and General Manager of KTNV, Channel 13 in Las Vegas announced today that news anchor Cathy Ray is leaving Channel 13 Action News for medical reasons.
Ray has been on extended medical leave from KTNV since February. She has worked at Channel 13 as a reporter and anchor since 1994. She has won numerous awards, including multiple Emmy’s for her work at Channel 13.
In making the announcement Prather said, “We really miss Cathy. She’s a great communicator and a great reporter. Based on the number of letters and emails we’ve received, Las Vegas really misses her, too. We all hope she’s feeling better soon.”
Ray said, “This has been a really tough decision. I love my job in television and the people I work with at Channel 13. My doctors have advised me not to work right now, and for the foreseeable future. Las Vegas is our home, so we’re not going anywhere and if my health improves, I want to continue my career in broadcast journalism.”
Ray, who has a degree in nursing with an MS in Oncology, started her career in broadcast journalism at WNDU in South Bend, Ind. After South Bend, she worked Providence, R.I., and Boston before moving to Las Vegas. With her background in nursing, she often reported on medical issues and breakthroughs and she hosted the popular Cathy Ray’s Health Report series on Channel 13 Action News.
