The octuplets' family has had enough of the spotlight. Ed Suleman, the octuplets' grandfather says, "It's too much. She's fine, she's fine, the babies are fine, everybody's fine, except us because of you!" He is frustrated by increased media scrutiny over the discovery that the mother has six older children. Together they live in a modest house east of Los Angeles with their grandparents. Ed Suleman's wife told the Los Angeles Times that her daughter had the embryos implanted last year, and "they all happened to take." She later chose not to selectively reduce the number of embryos. The case has medical ethicists buzzing, one saying implanting eight eggs almost amounts to "medical malpractice," typically only one to four eggs are implanted. Dr. Anne Drapking Lyerly medical ethicist, Duke University says "It's not just putting her at risk, it's not just putting the babies she will bear at risk, but it's also putting her existing children at risk." Those six children are ages 7 through 2. The mother is 30, and there's been no talk of a father. Dr. Charles Sophyl LA City Dept. of Children's Services says "The doubts come in with who worked through this with this woman. Did they think through it appropriately with her to be able to say yes you can do it or no you can't?" Money likely will be an issue. The family filed for bankruptcy last year. The grandfather, who says he was in the Iraqi military plans to return to his native country to earn money to support his growing family.
