Everyday Heroes

Do you know a hero? The American Red Cross is now accepting nominations for its fourth annual Everyday Heroes Awards. Winners will be presented in several categories including good samaritan, firefighter and law enforcement, animal rescue and community service. Awards are handed out in October at The Rio. Farmers market

Have you ever been to a farmers market? This weekend, a grand opening was held for one in Henderson. About 35 vendors took part and 100% of the proceeds stay with the farmer helping to sustain smaller family farms. In a grocery store typically only 20% of what you spend goes back to farmers. The fresh52 Farmers Market runs each Sunday from 8:30am to 1pm and is located at 9480 South Eastern Ave. in Henderson (near Silverado Ranch Blvd.).

Locals deal @ Wolfgang Puck restaurants

How about getting a discount for just living here in Las Vegas? Wolfgang Puck is slashing prices at some of its restaurants. Just show your license for 20% off your food purchase. The deal is good at Spago, Cut, Trattoria Del Lupo and Postrio. You can score the bargain for lunch or dinner now through September 30th.

Las Vegas Film Festival

If you are looking for something to do this weekend, check out the Las Vegas International Film Festival. You can see more than 40 original films and documentaries at the Las Vegas Hilton. Slurpee time

No parent wants to hear their kid got a ticket from a police officer, but this is one ticket you will want your kid to get. Metro is teaming up with 7 - Eleven for Operation Chill. The program lets officers give tickets for kids doing good deeds or showing positive behavior. The ticket is for a free slurpee at 7 - Eleven. Slurpee time!!

An essay for a laptop

Where would we be without computers? Think about where kids would be without them. Thursday, 40 Valley High School students received new state of the art laptops. The Regional Transportation Commission partnered with the Clark County School District and Coca Cola to provide the computers. It was all part of a scholarship opportunity where students were asked to write an essay about how they can reduce their carbon footprint by using RTC services.

Summer reading

What are you reading these days? Sometimes sitting on the porch with a good book makes for the perfect Sunday afternoon. Monday, the Scholastic Books Summer Challenge kicked off. It's a four month literacy program to get kids to read during their summer break. First lady Dawn Gibbons read to some elementary kids this morning to help get things started.

Cash for schools

Nevada is getting some much needed money to help the lowest achieving schools, more than $23 million to be exact. The US Secretary of Education made the announcement Wednesday. The money is coming from the American Recovery and Investment Act. In order to get the money, Tier 3 schools are required to submit a plan of how they intend to use the money.

Keep those grades up!

Nearly 200 students were honored for academic achievement Tuesday at Cimarron Memorial High School. The event recognizes students who have maintained at least a 3.8 grade point average for three semesters or more. After the ceremony, the students were treated to a special reception.
